Fertility Tests

Fertility test facts

  • Fertility tests are critical for identifying the physiological causes that may prevent conception or carrying a pregnancy to term.
  • Fertility testing for women and men evaluates the reproductive organs and hormones, using analyses of blood, semen and urine, ultrasound and imaging tests, and in-office procedures that evaluate the health of patients’ reproductive systems.
  • The results of fertility testing enable a fertility specialist to develop a fertility treatment plan that may involve assisted reproduction therapies or other fertility treatments.

What is fertility testing?

There can be a variety of underlying causes when couples experience difficulty conceiving. Fertility testing enables both partners to get clarity and help decide on treatment.

Fertility tests for women and men include physical exams, as well as analysis of blood, urine and hormones. These include ovarian reserve tests for women and semen analysis tests for men. Testing also can include in-office X-ray, ultrasound and fiber-optic camera procedures.

Results from these evaluations provide a fertility specialist a holistic look at where complications exist and what treatments would best treat infertility.

Is fertility testing right for me?

If a couple has tried to conceive for more than 12 months without success (six months if the woman is age 35 or older), then it is time to consult a fertility specialist for fertility testing and diagnosis.

Other indicators for fertility testing and treatment to improve the chances for conception include:

  • Irregular periods.
  • Repeated miscarriages.
  • Being over 35 years old.
  • Sexually transmitted infections.
  • Chronic diseases.
  • Problems ejaculating.

Types of fertility tests

Female Fertility Testing

There are numerous fertility tests for the causes of female infertility including testing for complications with ovulation, issues with the reproductive system and hormonal imbalance.

Male Fertility Testing

Most often male infertility is caused by weak or low quantity sperm, so male fertility tests measure sperm health, the hormone balances that affect it and other issues related to the male reproductive system.
