Build a Family with Fertility Treatments for Wounded Veterans

Fertility Treatments for Wounded VeteransMembers of the Armed Forces have made sacrifices for our freedom.

Advocates for veterans estimate that as many as 2,000 U.S. veterans are candidates for in vitro fertilization (IVF) because their fertility was affected by injuries or conditions related to their military service. But fertility treatments are often too expensive for veterans. However, as of October 2016, the Department of Veterans Affairs now offers fertility benefits for wounded veterans to help with the cost of treatment. Our DFW fertility center explains what you need to know about this new law, and whether it can help you build a family.

Fertility treatments for wounded veterans are now more accessible

In 1992, Congress banned the Department of Veterans Affairs from paying for fertility treatments for wounded veterans. The law did not prohibit paying for fertility treatments for active-duty service members. However, service members who may need infertility treatment most likely don’t think about it or discover the need for it until they get back home. Many former service members and veterans advocates thought that this law was unfair to wounded veterans who gave so much for our country.

Lawmakers were able to temporarily remove the ban against using VA benefits to pay for IVF for wounded veterans. There are some limitations, though. Namely, the new law will expire in two years. Veterans and their advocates, including the physicians at our DFW fertility center, think that wounded veterans should always be entitled to affordable fertility care. Luckily, many individuals and groups are lobbying to make the law permanent.
