In Vitro Fertilization in Plano – Solutions for Endometriosis, Male Infertility, and More – Dallas IVF Near Allen and Frisco
Originally in vitro fertilization was performed only on women with tubal factor infertility. Now, in vitro fertilization is performed on couples with all types of infertility, including those with endometriosis, ovulatory dysfunction and male factor infertility. Couples who carry genetic diseases and those with recurrent pregnancy loss also may be candidates for in vitro fertilization. At Dallas IVF in Plano, near Allen and Frisco, some couples undergo in vitro fertilization as a first line of treatment, bypassing more conservative treatments.
In Vitro Fertilization is recommended as a First Line of Treatment for couples experiencing:
- Severe male factor infertility – Couples with severe male factor infertility, based upon a semen analysis, come to Dallas IVF and pursue IVF - ICSI at their initial treatment. This also includes men with obstructive azoospermia, which describes a subset of men who are able to make sperm but have a blocked duct system, as in men who have had a vasectomy. These men may require a surgical procedure, such as a testicular biopsy or epididymal aspirate, to retrieve sperm. To help couples with severe male factor infertility, we perform a procedure called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in conjunction with an IVF cycle. During ICSI, individual sperm is injected into a solitary egg to promote fertilization. A couple experiencing only mild male infertility can undergo intrauterine insemination at Dallas IVF to help them conceive.
- Tubal factor infertility/severe endometriosis/pelvic adhesions – Women with severely damaged tubes, pelvic adhesions, or extensive endometriosis that prevents the normal movement of eggs and sperm down the fallopian tubes are often not candidates for artificial insemination and should consider in vitro fertilization at Dallas IVF in Plano.
- Carriers of genetic diseases – These couples may pursue in vitro fertilization with preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). With PGD, individual eggs or embryos can be tested to determine if they have the genetic abnormality in question, and only unaffected embryos will then be transferred.
- Concerns about multiples - Patients sometimes choose in vitro fertilization as a primary treatment if they have concerns about multiples. Many women do not want to risk the 10 percent chance of multiples that can occur with a Clomid® cycle, or the 20 percent chance of multiples that can occur with gonadotropins. With in vitro fertilization, a woman can elect to have a single embryo transfer. The chance of having a single blastocyst split into two, resulting in identical twins, is relatively small, and occurs in about one percent of our in vitro fertilization cases at Presbyterian ARTS in Plano.
Often women attempt less aggressive therapies prior to in vitro fertilization, including treatments at our Plano practice that may include Clomid®, artificial insemination, or gonadotropin therapy. If they fail to conceive with these less aggressive therapies, they can then proceed to in vitro fertilization.

In Vitro Fertilization is recommended as a Secondary Line of Treatment for women experiencing:
- Unexplained infertility – Women with a completely normal workup.
- Endometriosis – The presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterus, which may interfere with tubal function. (Dr. Barnett offers both surgical and nonsurgical treatments for endometriosis at his practice near Allen to help women manage the disease if necessary.)
- Uterine Disorders
- Recurrent pregnancy loss – Many of these women have higher rates of aneuploides (abnormal embryos) and may wish to have preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) done to place unaffected embryos back in the womb.
- Age related decline in fertility – Many women who are near the end of their reproductive window may not wish to lose valuable months trying to conceive with less aggressive therapies.
- Ovulatory dysfunction – Women with ovulatory dysfunction do not ovulate in a predictable pattern or may not ovulate at all. Women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) fall into this category.
