Pre-Pregnancy No-No’s – Things to Avoid When You’re Trying to Get Pregnant

There are habits you should avoid when you’re trying to get pregnant

Dallas IVF knows that you’ve heard a lot of advice about what you should do when you’re trying to get pregnant, but what about the things you shouldn’t do? For a healthy pregnancy and baby, the physicians at our Dallas fertility center recommend avoiding certain substances and activities when you’re trying to conceive.

Trying to get pregnant? You should avoid smoking, caffeine and alcohol

Our Dallas fertility center is home to experts in reproductive medicine, so they know what you should avoid when you’re trying to get pregnant. Three of the most important “vices” to eliminate are smoking, caffeine and alcohol.

  • Give up smoking. If you’re a smoker who is taking steps to get pregnant, you should also take steps to quit smoking. Smoking impacts your ovaries and decreases your estrogen levels, which can make it more difficult for you to conceive. Additionally, babies whose mothers smoked during pregnancy are more likely to have a low birth weight and be born prematurely.
  • Ditch caffeine. Reducing caffeine consumption when you’re trying to conceive can help you get pregnant. Heavy caffeine consumption is associated with reduced fertility. If you get pregnant during a time when you were consuming a lot of caffeine, you shouldn’t panic. However, if you can reduce your caffeine intake, our fertility specialists recommend it.
  • Eliminate alcohol. You know that you should avoid drinking when you’re pregnant, but you should also limit your alcohol consumption when you’re thinking about getting pregnant. Heavy alcohol consumption (more than two drinks a day) has been linked to reduced fertility. After becoming pregnant, we recommend that you cut out drinking completely. No amount of alcohol has been proven to be safe, and heavy drinking has been shown to cause birth defects like fetal alcohol syndrome.
