Using donor sperm IUI for lesbian couples is one way for same-sex couples to create their family
Same-sex couples who want to start a family may want to consider using donor sperm for lesbian IUI, or intrauterine insemination. IUI is less expensive than IVF, or in vitro fertilization, and it’s a good option for couples when one partner meets the following requirements.
- Her fallopian tubes are open.
- Her uterine cavity is normal.
- She has cycles that will respond to fertility medications.
Choosing a sperm donor
When a couple chooses to use donor sperm for lesbian IUI, choosing a donor is an important part of the process. Couples may choose an anonymous sperm donor from a sperm bank or ask someone they know to be their sperm donor. In both cases, the donor sperm must undergo a thorough screening process to protect mother and baby.
Donor sperm for lesbian IUI is screened for certain infections, including HIV, hepatitis B, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomoniasis, streptococcal species, and cytomegalovirus or CMV. The sperm is also screened for white blood cells, which can indicate reproductive tract infections.
Sperm donors also need to provide a thorough medical history. If an anonymous sperm donor or a donor known to a couple have any of the following in their history, our Dallas fertility center cannot use the sperm donation: sex with multiple partners, iv drug use, homosexual activity, genital herpes or a blood transfusion that occurred in the past year.

We prepare donor sperm for lesbian IUI by using a procedure to “wash” the sperm, which separates the sperm cells from the seminal fluid.
